SECONDARY 486
PUBLIC LANDS HIGHWAY DISCRETIONARY PROGRAM
Summary of Facts

State: Montana

County: Flathead

U.S. Congressional District Number: Montana District 1

Congressional District Members:

Senator Max Baucus
Senator Conrad Burns
Representative Rick Hill
Project Location: This proposed project is located in Flathead County, northwest Montana. Montana Secondary route 486 (S-486) begins with the end of pavement at Canyon Creek and continues approximately 9.2 miles north and concludes at Camas Creek, the west entrance to Glacier National Park.

Public Land Category: Montana Secondary 486

Proposed Work: The proposed scope of this project is to improve the condition of the roadway by increasing the depth of gravel cover, as well as asphalting the reconditioned surface for the approximately 9.2 miles of Secondary 486 from Canyon Creek to Camas entrance of Glacier National Park.

Project Purpose: This project will repair and improve the existing road, which serves as year- round access to the residents of the North Fork and the west entrance of Glacier National Park. Recent traffic volumes indicate an ever increasing traffic volume from the west entrance of Glacier Park south toward Columbia Falls via Secondary 486. With increased traffic volumes it has become nearly impossible to maintain the gravel surface because of continuing losses of aggregate. The July/August edition of the LTAP Quarterly advised that 151 tons per year of dust is created by every acres of exposed gravel road of which the 76 tons travel outside the watershed. This approximately 9.2 miles stretch shows the greatest proportion of road in proximately to the North Fork of the Flathead River than any other section of the Secondary 486.

Using a 30-foot roadway surface to calculate, there is approximately 26.18 times the LTAP designated tonnage or 3,953 tons of dust and sediment being created with over ½ of that being directly deposited in the watershed and traveling downstream.
