The North Fork of the Flathead is a designated Bull Trout recovery stream and consideration toward the elimination of sediments in the watershed should continue and enhance that recovery effort.

The Camas Creek entrance to Glacier National Park continues to handle growing number of visitors and has shown a popularity in recent years of cross country skiing in the winter time. This project would enhance that recreational aspect.

This project enhances the safety of the route for localized and visitor travel by curing the dust and related problems associated with it. It should require no right-of-way expenditures or exhaustive engineering as it is already at grade.

Planning & Coordination: The Federal Highway Administration, the State of Montana, and Flathead County will be cooperating together in the planning and coordination of this project.

Current and Future Traffic: Based on significant growth in the use of this route to access a growing number of residents in the North Fork community and the acres of Glacier National Park, it is anticipated that traffic will continue to increase on a year-round basis due to the popularity of the area for living, recreating and gaining access to Glacier National Park.

With the continued discussion relating to the repair of Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park over a four to 10 year interval, it will also provide an alternative route to visitors of the Park who want to take in the wild and scenic river - the North Fork of the Flathead.

Project Administration: The Federal Highway Administration, Vancouver, Washington, will be administrating this project.

Amount of Funds Requested: The total estimated project cost for the construction and
administration of this project is $2.4 million for the approximately 9.2 miles of this project.

This value may vary downwards as to the cooperation received by all parties to this effort.
Commitment of Other Funds : No other funding sources have been committed to this project.

Previous PLH Discretionary Funding: Previous Forest highway dollars have been used in prior
upgrades, but no PLH discretionary funds have been used to date.

Future Funding Needs: None are anticipated.

Project Maintenance: Flathead County is currently responsible for maintaining this section of S-486 within the limits of this project. It is anticipated that recent legislation will transfer maintenance, responsibility to the Montana Department of Transportation..
