Same-day coverage of Polebridge Fourth of July parade posted

Polebridge 4th of July 2013Well, now. The Daily Inter Lake posted coverage, with photos, of the Polebridge Fourth of July parade almost before the last pulled pork sandwich was consumed. They couldn’t quite get a handle on the idea that there are no parade organizers and they listed Larry Wilson as “part of the North Fork Preservation Association” (cough, cough), but it was a nice article . . .
[July 5 update: The Hungry Horse News also got into the act and posted a fairly extensive photo gallery from the parade. There are many familiar faces]

The Fourth of July means many things to many people, but one recurring theme is freedom.

Freedom from Great Britain, freedom from tyranny, and, in Polebridge, freedom from order.

The tiny community 35 miles north of Columbia Falls has held a small parade for several decades on Independence Day, and the requirements for getting in are quite strict.

“It’s not planned,” said parade marshal and 34-year Polebridge resident Rob Fisher. “If you want to be in it, you just show up at high noon.”

Larry Wilson: American flags and automatic bear traps

Larry Wilson covers two big events of the past week: The annual Polebridge Fourth of July Parade and the Bear Fair, both of which were rousing successes . . .

What a great week on the North Fork. The Fourth of July parade was a big success, with some resident-created floats, lots of American flags and handsome kids on unicycles leading the whole thing…

Also this week was the Bear Fair in beautiful downtown Polebridge, which was funded in part by a Forest Service Resource Advisory Committee grant…

Larry Wilson: Summer arrives in North Fork

Larry talks about the arrival of summer on the North Fork and some of the upcoming activities and social events . . .

Deadline for turning this column in to the Hungry Horse News is noon on Monday. Consequently, I usually write it on Sunday afternoon and, rarely, early Monday morning. This week it’s Monday morning.

I’m trying to get used to the idea that it’s almost the Fourth of July. First it seemed that the snow would never melt in my front yard, and when it did – in late May – it has seemed as if the weather would never warm up.

Polebridge Fourth of July parade kicks off at noon

Polebridge will have its usual (I use the term advisedly) Fourth of July parade this year. Here’s how the Hungry Horse News puts it:

“The Fourth of July parade at Polebridge will start at noon… The Northern Lights Saloon will have an outdoor barbecue in the afternoon and serve dinners. Polebridge has one of the most unique and shortest parades in the valley, often with hilarious political overtones. The event usually draws 1,000 to 2,000 people each year.”

The HHN also points out that there will be no fireworks (well, duh — lots of trees and long grass?) and no outdoor live music (not officially, anyways).
